Hey, I’m Jay. An enthusiast and perfectionist in front-end development
The beginning of my front-end career
In 2016, I was still a master’s student major in Electro-Optical. To be honest, that wasn’t what I love. There was one day, I saw a Youtube video teaching people how to build a website which extremely caught my eyes. Thus, I made a big decision. I dropped out as Steve Jobs did and changed my career path to be a front-end developer.
I started to learn from the online course at first, but not quite systematic. Therefore, I was thinking about study overseas. I found out there is an intensive six-month program called front-end developer at BCIT. So I worked my butt off to pass the entrance requirement.
In 2018, I landed Vancouver! The course is intensive, but that was the most fulfilled time so far in my life.
In this program, I learned the fundamental of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The course also includes server-side programming utilizing PHP, MySQL, WordPress.
In addition to this, the course explores some modern web application frameworks, such as React, Angular. In terms of UI/UX, I got a lot of hands-on exercises, group work, and related-tool demonstrations.
My First Job at Leonton
At the end of 2018, I went back to Taiwan and started looking for a job. Luckily, I got two offers. I choose Loenton, an industrial networking communication manufacturer. Most of the time, I was designing and developing a new switch GUI, that I introduced React to replace the legacy system. I was also engaged in customizing existing products to fit customer requests.
In 2020, I decided to resign since there was no web-related developer that I can communicate.
My Second Job at ORing
Currently, I worked at the ORing cloud team as a front-end lead. I am responsible develop IIoT PaaS, SaaS platforms. I have self-taught a lot of development tools and introduce them to the projects. For instance, create the UI library and display it in Storybook. Or such as separating react client, server state by using context API, and react-query.
React Native is the tool that I am currently working on. It accelerates the building IOS/Android process by using the similar codebase. I am building a government deploys app called “班班冷氣安裝” this year.
My Side Projects
In this fast-paced programming world, I reckon that it is crucial to update my skills and to acquire new knowledge in my leisure time.
I help two of my friends to build landing pages and portfolios. To enhance the SEO, I leveraged Next.js static generation feature and headless WordPress as CMS.
Making cocktails at home is also one of my habits. I am currently building a cocktail recipe app since I suck at remembering recipes. React-Native and Firebase are the tools I used.
